  • The Death of Karma

    They announced it on radio,
    We laughed and hugged,
    The children, naked,
    Jumped and clapped,

    Women, sagged breasts,
    Raised their hands in prayer,
    Men smiled long creaky smiles,
    Smiles we had forgotten,
Ululations as we lined up for food.

    They brought it in trucks,
White heavy tortoises with red flags,
    Crawling in a single file,
    Farting clouds of dust,
    The children jumped and clapped.

    It came in spasm,
    Biting stomachs,
    Painful unbearable spasms,
    The children writhed and squirmed,
    Till their bodies went silent,

    Limp bodies,
    Lifeless eyes,
    Pools of diarrhea and vomit,
    A whole village went silent,
But for babies crying for breasts.

They heard it from a minister,
    They hatched and drew,
    Easy money,
    Last years rotting harvest,

    They laughed and toasted,
    Dreaming of cheques,
    Zeroes interrupted by commas

The world watched as karma died

    I will take my seat,

Sit at the corner by myself,

    Nobody will see me,

    And I won’t see anybody,

I will take out a notebook,

    Silently write down my thoughts,

    Nobody will disturb me,

    I will disturb nobody,

I will shut out the noises of the world,

As the pen draws my heart,

Nobody will see what I write,

I won’t let anybody read my thoughts

I will close my eyes in pain,

And a tear will blot the paper,

Nobody will see me try to wipe it off,

They won’t find out why there are smudges on my pages

    I will sit there silently,

    Mute to the world,

    The world silent on me…

    Then someone will come,

    Touch my shoulder and ask,

    “Hey, what's wrong?”

And I will wipe my eyes with the back of my hand,

And raise my face to them,

I will force a smile and say,

    “Nothing, am okay”

    She will smile at me

    And I back at her,

    Then and only then

    Shall I be okay

    When am in love

    Am really in love

And I mean cliché soap opera kind of in love

I spend hours on my bed,

    Thinking of her,

and when am done, hours more thinking about thinking of her,

When am in love I fantasize,

    stupid cliché fantasies,

of a ripped shirtless six pack me,

and a swoon every time she sees me,

I think if making her happy,

    And it makes me happy,

    I imagine her smiling,

    And it makes me smile.

    When am in love

    I write poems,

poems about what I do when am in love,

I want to call her every morning

Just to ask if she had nightmares

coz maybe she would sleep better,

Knowing I will be there in the morning,

When am in love am not me,

    Am just in love,

But I have only loved once,

And that’s the only way I know how.

Hand in your shield and spear

    Only warriors shall instill fear

    Yes, it’s harsh but you’re a stranger

And with the rules you must bear

For the land has been dear

To us, to spit don’t yo0u dare?

By giants with axes to spare none

    Tighten your loin clothe

To soil the earth is death

Death, the symbol of a new birth

We know the load is mammoth

    But you are strangers

The least we want is havoc

So remember, this is no oath

But the land of malkhoza is guarded

By giants axes long strong more you can fathom

    Will you settle in malkhoza?

Or you are just passing through?

If so where will you live?

If so how long will you be?

Do you wish to trade to malkhoza?

Or will you buy wares in mallkhoza?

If so where are your wares?

If so shall you pay taxes?

These are the ways of malkhoza

    As agreed by our forefathers

    The giants that protect others
