  • A King Is Born

( A poets birthday gift to himself)
At the foot of Nyeri Hill, history in the making,
Through Mathari Haspital, th world was to receive blessings,
    The prophesied one was coming,
But the world knew not of these tidings.

    Sunday 11th December 1988,
There is no star from the east to guide the shepherds,
Only the mighty sun, shining with extra zeal,
No heavenely choirs to welcome him,
Only birds sung, portending his arrival,
No trumpets blown in his honour,
Only blaring matatus, hooting in dishonor,

    2pm
    A feeble cry,
    The king was here,
Draped in rich violet velvet he was not,
But smart in a chocolate suit,
Knowing himself to be anointed, he tried to shout,
But only a sweet gurgle, damn you infant lungs!

Toothless gums, sparse curley hair, dark round eyes,
    The nurses shed tears,
The giant weighed in at 3.45kgs,

She gazes into his eyes, takes him in her arms,
    Stares at his beautiful face,
    A true figure of grace,

He looks at her gentle features,
    Beams and gleams,
For he knows the world is his.
