The verdict on the opening half of the 2009 Kenya Cup,exciting and
competitive. Pre season predictions have been somewhat rubbished,at
    least for now...
Nakuru RFC lead a pack of five teams all in contention for the league
title at this point in time. Their 30-13 away win over KCB saw them
ascend to the top of the Kenya Cup hierachy heading into match day
eight, which incidentally kicks off the league's final leg. Nakuru
will be away to a Mwamba side that is out to avenge their fist leg
    loss to the 'Wanyore'.
KCB, who lost their second home match on match day seven will be out
to bounce back and claim the double at the University of Nairobi when
they play hosts Mean Machine whom they beat on match day one. The
varsity side asked many questions of Mwamba in their 24-42 loss on
match seven and will be out for a win against the bankers.
Kenya Harlequin FC were ran close by Nondescripts RUFC  on match day
one. Coming off back to back defeats at the hands of KCB and Impala,
the reigning league champions will be out to secure maximum points
against a well drilled Nondies side.
Impala RFC play Strathmore. The first leg ended in an Impala victory.
Could Strathmore, coached by former Impala star Mitch Ocholla pull off
that upset victory on match day eight? Lets wait and see.
Meanwhile, the second division Eric Shirley Shield matches continue
this weekend with the top four teams from the two pools that make up
the ESS battling it out in the first leg of the quarter finals. The
bottom four teams in each pool will fight it out for the ESS Bowl,
whose quarter finals will run concurrently with the main quarters.
An interesting match up in the ESS main quarters is in the offing when
West Kenya, who have conquered all opposition before them, travel to
Nairobi to play KCB II in should be an entertaining first leg match.
Enjoy the matches while filling up the stands to support your favourite teams.

Impala RFC claimed their first title since 2004 with a comprehensive 31-14 win over Kenya Commercial Bank RFC. The Gazelles signalled their intent right from kick off, taking the game to KCB who ably dealt with the challenge thrown their way.

The Lions from KCB soon took control of the game, dominating in the forwards and were rewarded on nine minutes when their mercurial scrum half Peter Mutai scored the game's opening try on nine minutes. His brother Edwin Kiprono was sure with the conversion to take the scores to 7-0 for KCB.

Impala were stung by this and gave their response to the Lions but they had to contend with their solid defence. KCB continued to dominate in the forwards but were unable to turn their dominance into points, something that they would rue later on in the match. Innocent Simiyu was a constant threat to KCB and indeed his fourty yard sprint led to an infringement from KCB. Nato Simiyu scored the resultant penalty kick to reduce the deficit to 7-3.

KCB's response was swift, their attack led to an Impala infringement. Kiprono's penalty bounced off the upright as the scores stayed at 7-3.

Impala continued to cause KCB problems and they missed an opportunity to go ahead when their backs conspired to knock the ball with the try line in sight. They however kept up the pressure and were awarded a penalty after another KCB infringement. Felix Makori scored to reduce the deficit to 7-6.

Kiprono missed another penalty for KCB as they went into the break leading 7-6.

Impala's Bill Githinji gave his team a pep talk at half time that spurred them into a second half resurgence. Makori scored immediately after the restart to signal an Impala comeback. They led for the good, 11-7.

Buoyed by this try, the Gazelles camped in the Lions half, their early pressure paying dividends when they forced KCB into another error. Makori was sure with his penalty to give Impala a 14-7 lead. Makori touched down again on fourty seven minutes but missed his conversion. Impala 19-7.

Vincent Mose, playing for Impala, soon broke through the KCB defence but was thwarted by Benjamin Otieno's crunching tackle. Bryan Omondi of KCB was sinned on fifty five minutes and his team mate Anthony Ochino soon followed him to the cooler. Impala took advantage of their numerical superiority to score another try through Vincent Mose on sixty minutes. Moses Kola's conversion bounced off the posts as the red shirts led 24-7.

Simiyu crowned his evening with a try on sixty five minutes. Kola converted to extend Impala's lead to 31-7. Kenya Under 20 international and tournament most promising player Ken Isindu scored a try KCB late in the game.Kiprono converted, bringing the scores to 31-14. It was a sweet victory for Impala who won also won the under 20 title with a 29-14 win over Mwamba.Action now shifts to the Great Rift Tens in Nakuru from 30th May 2009.

  • Romania claim the JWRT as Kenya finish fourth

Posted: May 4, 2009, 12:56 pm by KCBRFC
Romania  have won the 2009 JWRT with a 25-13 win over the USA. Romania went into the lead through Stefan Patrascu who kicked over a penalty on 7 minutes. Tai Enosa levelled for the Junior Eagles with a drop goal on 15 minutes.

Robert Johnson kicked a massive penalty from inside the USA half to enable the Junior Eagles take the lead on 22 minutes but Patrascu soon brought the Romanians back in the game with his second penalty. The scores were 6-6 in this tense half.

Enosa scored a try minutes to half time and Johnson converted as the USA led 13-6 going into the half time interval.

The second half was an evenly contested affair, both sides prodding each other and it was evident from the way both sides played.

Adrian Apostol scored a try on 44 minutes that was converted by Patrascu. At 13-13, the game was finely poised for an exciting finish. Both sides defended resolutely but Romania got the better of the USA just as the game seemed to be headed for sudden death. Marian Pirvu scored a try on 72 minutes before Patrascu killed off the Junior Eagles on 77 minutes after scoring and converting his try. Final score Romania 25 USA 13.

The win earned the victors a ticket to the IRB World under 20 champions.

Hosts Kenya were unlucky in their loss to  Chile, going down 17-19 after trailing 3-14 at the half time break. They finished fourth behind Chile.

Felipe Beltran put Chile ahead on 14 minutes when he touched down .Nicolas Hereros' conversion put Chile 7-0 up on 15 minutes. Francisco Fernandez added a second try try that was successfully converted by Hereros. 14-0 to Chile on 27 minutes as they dominated Chipu in the forwards.

Chipu began to claw their way back into the match and Felix Ayange reduced the deficit to 14-3 when he put away a penalty on 34 minutes after a Chile infringement.

Second half action saw a rejuvenated Chipu take the game to Chile. Ayange was put through after the Kenyan backs played the ball in hand and Joseph Abala scored under the posts on 47 minutes courtesy of a flamboyant overhead pass from Ayange. Ken Andola converted as the score board read 14-10 in Chile's favour.

Realising that the game was within reach, Chipu came hard at Chile, who had to cope with unrelenting pressure from the home boys. They however made Kenya pay for poor finishing when Mauricio Rey scored a try on 63 minutes. Hereros missed the conversion as the scores read 19-10 to the South Americans.

Kenya responded in their characteristic athletic style and Graham Dinda's 72nd minute try that was converted by Andola set the stage for a frenetic finish. Chile held out to win 19-17 and claim the bronze medal.

Namibia claimed fifth place with a 48-43 win over Papua New Guinea while South Korea crushed the Cayman Islands 62-12 to  finish seventh.

  • Curtains fall on the JWRT 2009

Posted: May 1, 2009, 10:50 pm by KCBRFC
The IRB's Junior World Rugby Trophy draws to a close when the unbeaten Romania face the USA in the championship match at 3.30pm (1230GMT) on Sunday at Nairobi's RFUEA Grounds.

The Romanians have been ruthlessly efficient in disposing of their opponents en route to the final. Even as they played Chile in their Pool B decider on Wednesday, they knew when to pile the pressure and were rewarded with a 26-20 win that their captain Eduard Marinca described as "their toughest match at the JWRT yet."

Marinca refused to speculate on his team's tactics ahead of their clash against the USA, saying their approach was top secret. Spectators should nonetheless expect a bruising clash between two sides that on paper appear evenly match.

The Junior Eagles of the USA have on the other hand given their fans some anxious moments. Leading 32-14 against home side Kenya with 14 minutes left to play, they dramatically collapsed, going down 32-33. They seemed to be heading out of the JWRT when they trailed Namibia 15-17 with 20 minutes of play left but they overhauled the Africans, scoring that much needed bonus point as they claimed a close29-24 win that landed them the final berth.

Captain Robert Johnson acknowledges the tough task ahead but believes his side's experiences at the 2009 JWRT have given them that extra edge required to stop Romania.

In fly half Tai Enosa and winger Zach Test who have received call ups to the senior US side, the Junior Eagles have players who can turn the game in their favour and indeed the match between the tenacious US Junior Eagles and the well oiled Romanian rugby machine makes for one interesting final.

In other fixtures on Sunday, home side Chipu play Chile at the RFUEA from 1.30pm (1100 GMT) in the third place playoff. Chipu have done Kenya proud, missing out on the JWRT final by a single point and they should definitely take the game to Chile as they seek to end the tournament on a high. Chile have been equally impressive in Nairobi, only missing out on the final after that nerve wracking 20-26 loss to Romania.

Namiba play Papua New Guinea in the fifth place playoff at the Impala Grounds while South Korea play Cayman Islands at the RFUEA. Both matches kick off at 11.00am (0800 GMT)

  • Kenya bow out as USA face off with Romania in JWRT final

Posted: April 29, 2009, 10:13 pm by KCBRFC
A 67-0 whitewash of the Cayman Islands was not enough for the Kenyan Chipu after the USA scored a vital bonus point in their 29-25 win over Namibia on Wednesday afternoon that secured top spot in Pool A and an appearance in the IRB's Junior World Rugby Tournament in Nairobi.

The Chipu will now play in the classification matches for third and fourth position on Sunday.   The match
Ken Andola opened the scoring on 9 minutes with a drop goal before flanker Oscar Ouma touched on 14 minutes. Andola missed the conversion as Kenya led 8-0. Hooker Matthew Musalia stretched Chipu's lead on 19 minutes. Andola was sure with this conversion as the scores read 15-0 to thee home side.   The match turned into a physical affair with Kenya's eighth man Ken Isindu dominating, taking the ball to the Caribbean Islanders with his no holds barred straight running.    Patrice Agunda scored Kenya's third try of the match on 32 minutes after being put through by Andola who sliced open the Cayman Islands backline. Andola's conversion saw the Chipu lead 22-0.    Minutes later,Isindu the workhorse beat his defenders, again with his hard running but team captain Eric Kioko knocked on with the try line in sight.   Half time score Kenya 22 Cayman Islands 0   Kenya head coach Mitch Ocholla's half time pep talk must have fired impetus into their attack, they came into the second half guns blazing and scored on 47 minutes when Ouma touched down for his second try of the match.  Andola's conversion saw Kenya lead 29-0.    Dennis Karani piled on the misery when he scored on 54 minutes. Andola again converted as Kenya ran to a 36-0 lead.   Roving flanker Ouma completed his hat trick on 57 minutes as the Chipu continued to pound the Caymans into submission. Scores at this point, 41-0.   A Kenyan attack was countered by the Caymans defence who opted to raise the ball. Substitute Felix Ayange gathered the miskick, sidestepped his marker and raced to the tryline on 60 minutes. Kenya 46 Cayman Islands 0.   Isindu continued to torment his Cayman Islands defenders, hitting them at will and scored in the 66th minute through Jeremy Njoroge who had replaced Matt Musalia at hooker. Andola's conversion made it 53-0 to Kenya.   Isindu finally got just reward for his hard running and big hits when he touched down in characteristic fashion on 75 minutes. He powered his way past four Caymans defenders befored touching down under the posts. Andola took the scores to 60-0 for the Kenyan Chipu's.   Speaking after the match, Mitch Ocholla, Kenya's head coach, praised his charges, saying they had stuck to the intended game plan.   Last minute heartbreak   Kenya, with one foot in the final, were depending on the results of the second group game between Namibia and the USA .Everything seemed to going Chipu's way when the USA led Namibia 12-10 for large intervals of the match.    (Kenya needed the USA to beat Namibia without getting a bonus point as this would have ensured their participation in the JWRT final).   The match ended in a 29-25 win for the USA's Junior Eagles who topped the pool on 12 points, one more than Kenya's 11 points. The much fancied Namibia finished third in the pool. The dejection was plain to see on the faces of the over 700 fans who turned up at the RFUEA to cheer Chipu into an historic JWRT finals appearance.   The USA will play Romania who beat Chile  26-20 in an entertaining clash. Kenya plays Chile in the classification for 3rd and 4th position.

Bob Johnson, the US Junior Eagles captain was impressed with the level of play exhibited at the JWRT and singled out Kenya and Namibia as worthy opponents.

Romania's captain Eduard Marinca said that the game against Chile was tough, as they were similarly matched in terms of physique but praised his side's fighting spirit which enabled them seal victory at a time when Chile had closed the scores to 21-20 with minutes left on the clock.

    Sunday's order of play

7/8 playoff  South Korea v Cayman Islands 11.30 am
5/6 playoff  Namibia v Papua New Guinea 11.30 am
    3/4 playoff   Kenya v Chile  1.30 pm
FINAL       USA v Romania  3.30 pm

It's judgment day on match day three at the International Rugby
Board's Junior World Rugby Trophy (JWRT) in Nairobi. The two teams
that will qualify for Sunday's final will be known on this day when
the preliminary pool fixtures come to an end.

Hosts Kenya, lying third in Pool A behind Namibia and the USA, kick
off the day's proceedings when they face the fourth placed Cayman
Islands in the early kick off.

Mitch Ocholla, the Kenya under 20 head coach is upbeat ahead of this
clash. He heaped praise on his charges following their come from
behind 33-32 win over the USA's Junior Eagles on Saturday. He was
particularly impressed with Chipu's fighting spirit even as they
trailed 14-32 with less than fourteen minutes left on the ticker.

Shifting his attention to their do or die clash against the Cayman
Islands on Wednesday, Ocholla intimated that he would deploy a mobile
forward unit as he seeks to pile up the points against the Pool A
battering rams and secure Kenya's qualification to the JWRT final. The
injured trio of Kennedy Gacheru, Polycarp Odhiambo and Mike Wanjala
are all doubts for this clash though Ocholla believes that the rest of
the squad can competently and comfortably dispose of the Caymans and
    secure passage to the final.

The other clash in this pool sees leaders Namibia coming up against
second placed USA who are wounded after their dramatic collapse
against Kenya in Saturday's action. The two sides are also eyeing the
pool's single slot in the final. Both sides go into this clash knowing
that nothing short of a win and this match promises to be a thriller.

Pool B action sees South Korea play Papua New Guinea in what is
ideally are formality match as both sides lost their opening two
fixtures and are out of contention for the JWRT.

The other fixture sees the ruthlessly efficient Romanians take on the
workmanlike Chile in the battle for Pool B supremacy and a ticket to
    Sunday's JWRT final.

  • Rhinos win the Bamburi Rugby Super Series

Posted: April 19, 2009, 1:37 pm by KCBRFC

The Rhinos have reclaimed the Bamburi Rugby Super Series title with a 30-13 win over the Buffaloes at the RFUEA on Saturday.

    FIRST HALF

Simon Wariuki scored a drop goal within the opening minutes as Buffaloes led 3-0. The Rhinos patiently inched back into the game, battling the Buffaloes in the forwards in what was an intensely fought first half.

Tempers frayed on 35 minutes with a brawl breaking out between the two sides, causing a five minute delay.

On resumption, Buffaloes Martin Opondo was sin binned, reducing the Nakuru based side to 14 men.

Big George Mbaye of the Rhinos scored a try from the resultant penalty. Jude Thumbi missed the conversion as the Rhinos led for the first time, 8-3. Thumbi scored a penalty on 38 minutes while former Lions player John "Meso" Ahenda stole in on the blind side right on half time to give the Rhinos a 13-3 lead going into the half time break.

    SECOND HALF

The Buffaloes started this half on a positive note, pressing the Rhinos and were rewarded with a Kevun Otieno try on 46 minutes. Wariuki's conversion cut the deficit to 13-10. Sensing a Buffaloes backlash, the Rhinos brought on IRB Sevens Circuit top try scorer Collins Injera to add impetus to their attack.

This move eventually paid dividends with the Rhinos scoring a try through Patrick Onyango on 63 minutes. Thumbi was sure with the conversion as the score board read 20-10 to the Rhinos. Wariuki scored a second drop goal on 66 minutes, taking the score to 20-13.

Hungry for the crown, the Rhinos scored two more unconverted tries. Mbaye completing his double on 70 minutes while captain Daniel Kiptoo scoring on 75 minutes as they ran out 30-13 winners, adding to previous BRSS titles in 2003 and 2007.

Backrower David Mogere had a stand out performance for the Rhinos.

Pascal Wetukha, the Buffaloes coach, blamed his side's defeat on over confidence, but he was quick to add that the Buffaloes, who are largely comprised of Enterprise Cup champions Nakuru RFC will be a force to reckon with during the regular club season.

Earlier, Uganda's Rwenzori edged out Kenya's Nguvu Sharks 22-19 to claim third place.

After five gruelling rounds, the battle for the Bamburi Rugby Super
Series comes down to 80 minutes on Match Day 5.

Former champions Rhinos face off against the Buffaloes at 1530hrs
East African Time on Saturday afternoon at the RFUEA to fight for the
    2009 BRSS title.

To borrow but one sporting cliché, the form guide goes out the window.

Nothing else but what happens on Saturday afternoon matters. Not the
star players, not the coaches, not the best tries, tackles, dummies and
drop goals of the season, nor the best fans. Nothing but the final
result. And ultimately, this is why we are rugby fans.

In the words of a popular Australian rugby league commentator Phil
Gould, "the regular season is a Mickey Mouse competition. The only
thing that matters is winning trophies"

    May the best team win.

  • Bamburi Rugby Super Series: Semi Final Saturday

Posted: April 12, 2009, 4:30 pm by KCBRFC
It was semi final Saturday on match day 4 of the 2009 Bamburi Rugby
Super Series where Buffaloes and Rhinos won their matches to ensure an
all Kenyan final on Saturday 18th April 2009.

    Buffaloes v/s Sharks
    Venue: RFUEA Nairobi
    Attendance: +2000
    Weather: Clear

Two late tries from Vincent Mose and John "Che" Ekong'o saw the
Buffaloes deny the Nguvu Sharks a maiden appearance in the BRSS final.

Flyhalf Simon Wariuki opened the Buffaloes account with a 5th minute
drop goal, giving them an early 3-0 lead. They dominated the opening
exchanges and were rewarded with a 15th minute try from Lawrence Mutai
that extended the scores to 8-0.

The Sharks were stung by this, coming back into the game. Maurice
Mbai's 22nd minute trying reducing the deficit to 8-5. A massive Ian
Chewini penalty from 35 meters out tied the scores at 8-8.

The Sharks were back in the game, effectively dealing with Buffaloes
attacks while putting their foot on the gas pedal. They however failed
to turn their dominance into points and were punished by a second
Wariuki drop goal heading into the interval.

    Half Time Scores
    Buffaloes 11 Sharks 8

Mitch Ocholla's half time pep talk seemed to have inspired confidence
in the Sharks who came out guns blazing and were rewarded with a
second Chewini penalty that brought them level for the second time in
the match. 11-11 at this point.

Both sides prodded each others defences and it the Buffaloes fullback
Vincent Mose who touched down after some great interplay with Davis
    Yanga. 16-11 to the Buffaloes.

With only five points separating the two sides, the match was now
poised for an exciting finish. There were near misses from both sides
before the Buffaloes won a scrum down on the Sharks five yard. the
indefatigable John "Che" Ekong'o touched down at the dearth.

    Final Score
    Buffaloes 21 Sharks 11

The second semi final saw former champions Rhinos fight off a spirited
challenge from Uganda's Rwenzori, emerging 30-20 winners in a duel
that they led 17-5 at the interval.

Earlier, the Cheetahs beat outgoing champions Lions 27-15 in the fifth
    place playoff tie.

The Sharks will now battle with Rwenzori for the third place as
Buffaloes and Sharks duel for the 2009 BRSS crown next weekend at the
    RFUEA.

"What we need is continuity," the coach said.

  • What Kenya's exploits at the Rugby World Cup Sevens means for Africa

Posted: March 11, 2009, 10:33 pm by KCBRFC
(Courtesy of the Kenya Rugby Football Union)

Kenya's automatic qualification to the next Rugby World Cup Sevens is good news to African countries.

Before the fifth RWC Sevens in Dubai, questions were asked why Kenya was made to go through a qualification process in the Africa zone after proving her worth in the IRB Sevens World Series Circuit. The doubting Thomases were shamed after Kenya defied all odds to reach the fifth RWC Sevens in Dubai.

By reaching the main cup quarter final, Kenya had already joined the elite group of eight teams who automatically qualify. Unfortunately, there were some casualties on the way who will have to endure the qualification process. Among these are USA, Australia, France and Scotland who are core teams in the IRB Sevens World Series.

But, Kenya opened the doors for Namibia, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda who have been knocking on the doors of the RWC Sevens. It means Africa shall have five teams at the next RWC Sevens after Kenya and South Africa made it through automatically.

By virtue of reaching the semi-final, Kenya is likely to get a top four seeding unless the IRB uses the current form in the IRB Sevens World Series to determine the seedings like they did this year.

One of the ripple effects of Kenya's qualification could be a strong message to the International Olympic Committee that seven-a-side rugby needs to be included in the next Olympic Games.

The national sevens rugby team on Sunday returned home to a heroic reception following their outstanding performance at the just-concluded IRB Sevens World Cup in Dubai.

The team, led by coach Benjamin Ayimba and captain Humphrey Kayange, landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the afternoon to one of the most glamorous receptions ever accorded to sports stars returning from international duty.

There was a carnival mood at the airport as dozens of jubilant fans joined the players in song and dance while a battery of excited journalists clicked away.

Ayimba and Kayange described their performance as "phenomenal".

The Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) chairman, Richard Omwela, said the feat was a breakthrough not only for rugby but other sports in the country as well.

And Kayange said that their trial match against Fiji is what did the trick as Kenya rolled over the defending champions 26-7 to snatch a pricey Melrose Cup semi-final.

However, Argentina ended Kenya's fairytale with a 12-0 win in the semi-final.

Ayimba, who lavished praise on his troops for their belief, determination and hardwork, said they will continue to build on their success and at least reach the final in one the remaining events in the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Sevens Series this season.

Ayimba and Kayange were speaking upon arrival from their historic World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

    Automatic qualification

The sevens national team on Saturday made history by becoming the second team in Kenyan sporting circles after the cricket team to reach the semi-finals of a World championship.

The cricket team upset the likes of Sri Lanka to reach the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup that was jointly-hosted by Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

By making the Cup quarters at the World Cup, it means that Kenya automatically qualifies for the next Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2013 hence creating one more room for another African country to join the elite group.

"It is known that when you are leaving high you tend not to work hard and that is what we want to avoid," said Ayimba upon arrival from Dubai.

Ayimba said that their focus now shifts to Hong Kong Sevens, the next event in the IRB World series.

"We want to at least to go past the quarterfinals. I will be glad if a win will come along side things are now becoming very unpredictable," said Ayimba.

Ayimba rued the errors the team committed against Argentina that cost them the final spot. "We are all humans beings and bound to mistakes," he said.

Kayange said that their triumph over Fiji exposed the giants.

  • On a high in Dubai....

Posted: March 6, 2009, 8:20 pm by KCBRFC

Kenya recovered from a try down to emphatically beat Hong Kong 43-7  at the Emirates Sevens ground on Friday to stay in contention for a quarter final berth at the IRB Rugby Sevens World Cup.

Kenya had the better of the opening half. Gibson Weru with two run-ins. For Hong Kong they got on the scoreboard early through Rowan Varty, but Kenya  started to impose themselves.
A brilliant display of running Sevens rugby from the Kenyans, led to dancing in the stands and on the pitch. Hong Kong worked hard in defence, but Kenya showed they are a force to be reckoned with. Lavin Asego, Collins Injera and Horace Otieno all with tries for Kenya.

additional information from Charles Nyende ( Nation Media Group)  in Dubai

Earlier on Thursday, Tunisia grabbed the lead moments into the kick of through Abess Kherfani in this opening Group "E" try before Kenya hit back with a powerful running display to score five unanswered tries as the Virgin Atlantic sponsored Kenyans prevailed 29-7.

It settled the jitters of Kenya who were looking for a good start on Thursday ahead of Friday's final group matches against Hong Kong and England.

"Our minimum target is to make the Cup quarterfinals. We now have to beat Hong Kong today (Friday) and then look to the group decider match against England," Kenya captain Humphrey Kayange said after the match.

"Yes, we cannot cheat ourselves about this one. The big one will be against England. We will sleep on it and see how things go today (Friday)," coach Benjamin Ayimba said.

    Ruthless finishing

The top teams in each of the six pools together with the best two runners up will qualify for the Cup quarters set for Saturday.  England are favoured to top their pool led by Leicester flyer Tom Varndell who set the IRB world sevens series ablaze two years ago.

It will be interesting to see him come up with the current joint IRB sevens top scorer Collins Injera, who showed he was in his ruthless finishing form with three on day one.  "Collins is just in that great form he has been in of finishing," Ayimba said of his lead try scorer.

After a nervous start that saw Tunisia take the game to the Kenyans and lead with a converted try, Kayange broke free on the left wing to go in and out of a lone defender and canter 40 meters too bring the scores to 7-5. Victor Oduor then fed Injera on the tackle. And in his current form the chasing Tunisians could only stare at his clean pair of heels.

Kenya paly England in a few minutes after going to press, the winner of this match qualifies for the quarter finals and the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup while the loser depends on mathematics and good luck to make it thorugh to the quarter finals.

  • Vijana msilale...bado mapambano...

Posted: December 1, 2008, 3:28 pm by KCBRFC
"Vijana msilale...lale lale...vijana msilale...bado mapambano..."That was the message from the victorious Wazee side to the vanquished Vijana at the end of the annual Wazee-Vijana tie that took place this past weekend at the Lions Den. The understrength Wazee side beat a full strength Vijana, who fielded the world's oldest looking 23 year old, Calvins Biko 38-24 in a display of skill and authority.

Dedan Omondi gave Vijana their only lead of the match, cruising past Innocent "Big Hits" Moturi to touch down under the sticks.7-0 to Vijana following a successful conversion from Haroun Lubisia.

The Wazee led by match MVP Wangila "Hitman" Simiyu soon took control of the tie, eventually scoring a total of six tries against Vijana's four.Chris Majale gave Haroun Lubisia food for thought with his display at Stand Off. Ronnie Mwenesi was cut down to size by the Wazee though he gave Arthur Shikwe something to think about during the match. John Macharia should have been elsewhere Saturday. He was on the receiving end of several hits(stools) from the rampmant Wazee.

Vijana showed us they can run,but that was the only highlight of their performance on Saturday.Indeed they wanted to run from every situation imaginable, from lineouts, scrum downs, penalties, substitutions, during the pre match briefing by the referee, they even wanted to run during the water break.

This was a sweet win for the understrength Wazee who were missing Bill Githinji(hamstring),Anthony Ogot(fatigue), Charles Nyende (celebrating an award from SuperSport), Dennis Mwanja (watching the IRB Sevens Dubai Leg),Anthony Ochino (academic commitments), David Orenda (missing in action) and Mike Kwambo(knee) among others. Vijana remain winless in the annual fixture and have vowed to come back stronger in 2009.
  • Wazee- Vijana update

    By John "OJAY" Ojara

Preparations are at the peak for this epic event due to take place at the Lions Den, Ruaraka. The wazee have gone into camp and are training at an undisclosed location under the skillful eye of former New Zealand international Tana Umaga. During a recent interview Umaga said quote "The wazee are all set for the big clash. There's nothing more i can add. We are polishing up on a few moves at the backrow, but their fitness levels are surprisingly way above the required levels." Tana Umaga is on a coaching tour and was invited by Wangila "the Hitman" Simiyu to give a few playing tips to the wazee squad.

Meanwhile wazee utility player Henry "total fitness" Emuye has yet to report to camp and had this to say during a phone interview earlier in the week, "I've total confidence in the wazee team. My training here in Eldoret with Jelimo's fitness coach was neccessary in order to take advantage of the high altitude conditions. i'll report to camp as soon as possible."

    More news soon...

Meanwhile a request by the Vijana team to have 22 ambulances on standby for their use was turned down. Speaking to the press their acting acting captain Oscar Mango had this to say, "we are young, we haven't lived long enough and so we need assurance that each of the vijana players are covered 24-7 during the duration of the match. i forsee heavy injuries on our side and our chics will be on the sidelines. i've never been so afraid." Speaking from their training camp at Ofafa Jericho their star player Aaron Lubisia requested for a donation of boots and shorts and appealed to well wishers to support their cause. In his words he said, "Even though we are going to loose why not loose looking smarter (sic)".

Vijana will be naming their squad tonight at Apple Bee's and are requesting anyone with coaching abilities to help with last minute tips on how to loose with less than 20 points. Vijana have never won a match since the last century when wazee/vijana clash begun.

    More news soon...

  • Build up to the Wazee -Vijana clash

Posted: November 13, 2008, 7:37 pm by KCBRFC

The annual Wazee - Vijana tie takes place on Saturday 29 November 2008 at the Lions Den.

To qualify as a player for Wazee, one must be 26 years or older while the Vijana will consist of players aged 25 years and below.

The Wazee camp is in fine fettle, raring to take on the Vijana.

However, there are questions surrounding the age of some "Vijana". A report leaked from the Immigration Department reveals Sebastian Shivoka's passport application filed in 1998 stating he has 19 at the time.

Harun Lubisia is much older than he looks, reports reveal he is closer in age to John Ojara who has played for KCB since its inception in 1989.

Philip Wamae was in the first batch to sit for the KCSE examination in 1989 but he features prominently among the "Vijana". One of two things, he must be a genius who froze time or a blatant age cheat.

Mike Walekhwa is awaiting the results of a carbon dating test done at the National Museum that will determine whether or not he is eligible to play for the Vijana. He claims he lost his identity card, but he always seems to lose it around this fixture.

Victor Andanje sung in the Nairobi Primary Schools mass choir in 1987 at Kasarani aged 12 and features for the Vijana. Hardly 25!

Will the Wazee, average age 27,overcome age cheating from the Vijana, whose average age is 33, and prevail in this annual fixture? Come to the Lions Den on Saturday 29 November to find out.

The next update looks at the reasons behind "Vijana's" age falsification.

  • Harambee Stars...a need for stability...

Posted: October 20, 2008, 10:28 pm by KCBRFC
As the dust settles on Harambee Stars qualification for the final round of the African Nations Cup/ World Cup 2010 qualifiers, we need to ask ourselves this question,"where do we go from here?" Are the Stars going to face more upheaval with Francis Kimanzi's tenure as head coach uncertain or will they be accorded all the support and stability required to bring out more sterling performances?

The draw for the final round of qualifying takes place on Wednesday 22nd October 2008 in Zurich where Kenya gets to know here opponents for the final round. What plans does the KFF or the people handling the Stars have in store? To the best of my knowledge there are several FIFA sanctioned dates for friendlies between October and March 2009 when the qualifiers kick off. It would be ideal for the KFF to organize several fixtures both home and away in readiness for the task at hand. Let them not wait for the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, it is upon the KFF to take the initiative to keep the Stars' busy in the interim. It is amazing how the Stars' qualified for the final round having played only ONE build match against Malawi while other federations took advantage of the FIFA sanctioned dates tokeep their representative sides busy.

It is imperative that the team stays together, and stays active so as to improve the team's general performance. It is worth noting that Dennis Oliech bagged five of Kenya's eight goals during the first stage of qualifying. This is simplistic thinking but don't you think that having the team play more matches together will bring out more goal scorers as well as more talent in all departments. Keeping the team busy would also help identify areas requiring corrective action. It is important to note that in the recent loss to Guinea, Kenya conceded two goals from setpiece situations.

The recent fixture in Guinea exposed Kenya's weaknesses in playing away from home, the team was subdued for large spells of the game, threatening but lacking lacking confidence though their fightback with eight minutes left spoke volumes. I hold the view that if, in the forthcoming period,if the KFF were able to keep the team together and get them to play fixtures away from home in hostile environments, we could be in serious contention for a berth at the Cup of Nations in Angola and it would be realistic to dream about playing in the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.Just look at Nakuru RFC's steady rise to prominence, they have been together for close to three years and are slowing staking a claim as one of the teams to beat on the Kenya club rugby scene. If a community based club from Nakuru has reaped the benefits of growing a team, why can't the KFF? This,in my opinion is the first step towards making Kenya an African footballing powerhouse.

  • Lions in tricky pool for Driftwood

Posted: October 16, 2008, 2:58 pm by KCBRFC
The Lions find themselves in a tricky pool C when the Western Union National Sevens Circuit anchors in the coastal city of Mombasa for the  Driftwood Sevens. The Lions come up against the team they vanquished in the Prinsloo Quarter finals Kenya Harlequins. Other teams in the pool include the unpredictable Kenyatta University Blak Blad and hosts Mombasa SC.

The Lions boasting a sprinkling of talent in the form of Collins Kimani, Jotham Yahuma, Benjamin Ojema and the steely experience of Kenya Sevens stalwart Dennis Mwanja will be out to improve on their semi final placing in Nakuru where they were narrowly beaten 19-24 by Impala in a tight semi final encounter.

  • Gallant Stars fall to Guinea but still qualify for final round of qualifiers

Posted: October 13, 2008, 12:34 pm by KCBRFC
Trailing 0-3 with 8 minutes left on the ticker at the September 28 Stadium in Conakry, Guinea, sensational striker Dennis Oliech proved to be the menace we all know him to be when he struck a double as Kenya eventually went down 2-3 to the hosts.

Ismael Bangoura kept up his prolific goal scoring record for Guinea with a first-half goal set up by Fode Mansare.

Two more goals from defender Mamadou Bah and Kamil Zayatte after the hour mark increased Guinea’s lead but Kenya fought back with two goals from French-based striker Dennis Oliech in the last eight minutes.

Oliech first scored at the near post from a Kevin Ochieng cross, silencing the home team who had begun showboating, assured of the three points and qualification to the final round of qualifying. If his first goal was classy, the second was sheer brilliance. Oliech picked up a loose ball deep in the Guinea half, skipped past five players before blasting the ball past a stranded Naby Yattara in the Guinea goal.

The win enabled Guinea top Group Two with 11 points and Kenya, who were on top going into the match, finished second but well within the points bracket to seal passage to the next round as one of the best second-placed eight teams.
Harambee Stars looked vulnerable from set pieces and attacks from the flanks but overall this was one of their best performances away from home in many years. Maybe more high profile matches away from home will give them that extra edge in away fixtures. The KFF should also retain the technical bench and keep the team together.Just a thought.

The draw for the final round of qualifying takes place on 22nd October in Zurich. The 2010 World Cup dream remains alive for the Stars.

  • Cubs lose Grand Slam tie

Posted: October 6, 2008, 1:09 pm by KCBRFC
The Cubs lost 17-23 to Quins II in the PostaPay Grand Slam on
Saturday, missing out on the Ksh 100,000 payout. Steve Matioli kicked
the Cubs into the lead early in the game from a penalty. They would
then concede two tries and a penatly that left them trailing 3-15 at
    half time.

Second half subs Xavier Makuba and Walter Omole were behind a second
half revival that saw the Cubs come within whiskers of the fat cheque
when they rallied to lead 17-15 within minutes left on the ticker.

The Cubs dominated the second half with structured play, forcing Quins
onto the back foot. Matioli's second penalty reduced the deficit to
6-15 before winger Curtis Katembo scored at the corner flag to bring
the score to 11-15. More pressure from the Cubs forced Quins into yet
another error. Matioli kicking over for 14-15.

The Cubs were in the ascendancy when Matioli drilled over another
penalty from a tight angle that saw the Cubs regain the lead at
17-15.The controversial substitution of scrum half Billy Odhiambo at
this stage saw them lose their momentum and composure.

A moment of madness saw them concede a late penalty that swung the
lead back to Quins 17-18 with three minutes to play. Flanker Ian
Indimuli's attempted touch kick was charged down by the Quins players
who scored the killer try right at the end.

This defeat was a lesson in mental toughness and tactical awareness,
something to build on for 2009.

The 15's season has now taken a bow, paving way for the 7's circuit
which kicks off with the Prinsloo Nakuru Sevens on the weekend of
    10/11 October 2008.

  • Nakuru end 45 year wait for Enterprise Cup

Posted: September 29, 2008, 3:33 pm by KCBRFC
Nakuru RFC, fondly referred to as "Wanyore" by their adoring fans
ended a 45 year wait for the Enterprise Cup when they beat pre-match
favourites Mwamba RFC 34-24 in a pulsating final played at the RFUEA
on Saturday. They last won the cup in 1963.

It was the end of a good run which saw them defeat last year's
champions Kenya Commercial Bank and Impala RFC in the semis and
quarter final. Popularly known as 'Wanyore' Nakuru RFC pocketed
    Sh250,000 from the sponsors Zain.

Vincent Mose, the Nakuru RFC full-back and captain received the fat
cheque and trophy from Rene Meza, the Zain Managing Director who led a
    powerful delegation from the sponsors.

The full back who also plays for the national seven-a-side team said
the final was quite difficult. "We won because the players were
composed. It is always difficult to come from behind and win against a
classy side like Mwamba," Mose admitted. Nakuru RFC panicked when
Mwamba took an early lead but got back their groove and a change of
tactics ensured the cup was on its way to the Rift Valley.

Although Nakuru RFC had an advantage in the forwards where they pushed
around Mwamba quite a bit, they still took on Mwamba backs. Twenty
three year old former student at Kabarak University Davis Yanga who
was named as the man of the match did the damage scoring two tries on
    the right wing.

Some positional changes saw Graham Kombo moved from the left wing to
backrow to partner Che Ikongo and Nick Lango. It was the ability of
the Nakuru RFC forwards to win balls in the line out and rucks which
was the difference in this tightly fought match. Lango was a good ball
carrier while scrum-half Gibson Weru just held onto the ball for a
little bit before releasing to his fly-half Simon Wariuki to kick for
    territory.

Wariuki matched Asego in re-starting the game hanging the ball in the
air for a long time to give his players adequate time to retrieve.

Humphrey Kayange, the Mwamba captain said the systems and game plan
did not work against Nakuru. Despite a storming start which saw Lavin
Asego miss an attempted drop kick after only 32 seconds of play,
Mwamba were a pale shadow of the side which overran Nondescripts 44-8
    in the semi-final.

"We did not play our best match. It is a painful defeat. Nakuru got us
on the rucks and neutralized our backrow. In the second half, fatigue
set in and Nakuru stepped up their game. We were unable to respond,"
    Kayange explained.

John Onyango-Mbai agreed. "Nakuru had us on the backfoot, beat us on
the breakdown points and won turn over balls," he stated. Mwamba got
    Sh125,000 for finishing second.

Steve Sewe opened the scores for Mwamba in the third minute. Davis
Yanga leveled for Nakuru RFC in the 11th minute. Tito Oduk broke the
deadlock with a penalty for Mwamba in the 18th minute.

As Nakuru gained their footing, Wariuki missed two penalties before
Che Ikongo went over for Nakuru's second try under the posts which
Wariuki converted as they led 12-8.

Collins Injera restored Mwamba's lead with a try in the 31st minute.
The lead lasted only until the third minute of the second half when
Wariuki put over a penalty from infront of the posts.

Four minutes later, Richmond Baraza crossed over from a line-out on
the five metre line to bring back Mwamba into contention. A silly
penalty by Mwamba infront of the posts was slotted by Wariuki to tie
the scores 18-18 for the second time. He kicked over one more in the
55th minute to break the deadlock.

Tito Oduk leveled for Mwamba in the 57th minute. When Yanga scored his
second try in the 59th minute, the writing was on the wall because
Mose kicked and chased a grubber to score and extend the lead 31-21.
Oduk replied with a penalty but Wariuki had the last say kicking over
a penalty with eight minutes left.

Nakuru RFC will now meet Quins in the Posta Pay Grand Slam next
    weekend at the RFUEA ground.

Best of luck to the KCB Cubs as they play in their sixth successive
Mwamba Cup final against Quins II. Remember the Cubs are looking for a
fourth Mwamba Cup, having claimed the title in 2004,2005 and 2006.

'Son, what is it with you. Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said,
    'David, I don't know and I don't care.'"

Hurricane David Holwell, when asked about the upcoming season: "I want

  • A brief review of the 2008 season

Posted: September 22, 2008, 4:55 pm by KCBRFC
To summarize, the 2008 season has been full of challenges, and the results
show how competitive the league has become.

Having lost key players, notably  Arnold Odera and Andrew Amonde to the US coupled with injuries to Jotham Yahuma,Anthony Ochino, Dennis Mwanja,Emmanuel  Shitote for long durations,as well as the loss of explosive winger Richard Kinyany through work commitments, then throw in the technical changes at the club,it was always going to be hard to defend our position at the helm.
Our contribution to Kenya XV can't go unmentioned. In 2008, we also finally got the most elusive silverware, the Super Series.

The Cubs impressive run continues, and this remains the backbone of Kenya
Cup ambitions. We should expect a smooth transition of a good number of the Cubs
into the main league, and with this, the Lions will revert to winning ways.

As we look forward to our 20th Anniversary, expect KCB to continue dominating Kenya rugby.

A 7-19 loss in the Zain Enterprise Cup semi final to Nakuru RFC on Saturday at the RFUEA sums up a disappointing 2008 season that has seen the Lions lose the Floodlit, Kenya Cup and now the Enterprise Cup.

It is now upon KCB's Cubs to win reclaim the Mwamba Cup and bring silverware to the Lions Den whose trophy cabinets have been emptied this year. The Cubs qualified for their sixth successive final with a 23-14 win over Impala's Boks.

Fresh from a 39-0 away win over Mombasa in the Zain Enterprise Cup Semi final, defending champions KCB Lions come up against Nakuru RFC, the only side to beat them at the Lions Den during the 2008 Kenya Cup league.

This promises to be an explosive, exciting match, typical of previous encounters between the Lions and the "Wanyore" who knocked out pre match favorites Impala 24-15 at their Nakuru backyard.

Watch out for the post match report.

Harambee Stars beat Namibia's Brave Warriors 1-0 ending a twelve year losing streak against the Brave Warriors at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday. The win before a near capacity stadium, also put Stars at the top of Group Two in the World Cup/Africa Cup Nations qualifier on 10 points.

Guinea, who until Saturday were the group leaders with seven points, play Zimbabwe Sunday in another Group Two match.

The recalled Jamal "Malo Malo" Mohammed slotted home a 44th minute penalty awarded after Collin Benjamin hacked down John Njoroge to send the home fans into celebration.

Jamal "Malo Malo" Mohamed, scorer of the goal that sunk Namibia

The goal was a relief to thousands of fans who turned up to watch the game but were getting impatient with the blunt attack. The absence of suspended AJ Auxerre striker Dennis Oliech was clearly felt upfront with Stars lacking a hitman.
Mulinge Munandi, coming back to the team after a two year absence, made his presence felt in the fourth minute when he sent an inviting cross towards the Namibia goal, but Patrick Oboya, Macdonald Mariga and Allan Wanga were too late to tap the ball home.

    Alan Wanga in action
FK Siad Most midfielder Patrick Oboya, who also came back to the team after a one match suspension, excited the fans with his deft footwork in the early exchanges of the game. In the sixth minute, captain Robert Mambo failed to score from a Njoroge cross.

Six minutes later, there was a scramble at the Namibian goal with both Wanga and Mambo failing to tap home the ball.

Paulus Shipanga’s dangerous free kick on the edge of Kenya’s goal was cleared by Munandi as the match crawled to the quarter hour mark. Three minutes later, the Brave Warriors forced a corner kick. On the other side of the pitch, Attel Mbaha in Namibia’s goal stretched to stop Mohammed in what should have been Stars’ opening goal.

The Kenyan attack was unrelenting with Wanga again nearly beating Mbaha in goal. Mohammed shot wide from the edge of Namibia’s goal as Benjamin, who turns out for German Bundesliga side Hamburg, had a weak shot at goal on the stroke of half time.

Line-ups: Kenya: Noah Ayuko, John Njoroge, Mulinge Munandi, George Owino, Edgar Ochieng, Austin Makacha, Jamal Mohammed (Kevin Ochieng), Macdonald Mariga, Robert Mambo, Allan Wanga (Francis Ouma), Patrick Oboya (Patrick Shikokoti).

Namibia: Attel Mbaha, Hummel George, Hartmann Twamboa, Richard Ganiseh, Stephen Gougab, Oliver Risser, Collin Benjamin, Paulus Shipanga, Sydney Plastfies, Quinton Jacobs, Wilko Risser

  • Hail the Cubs, 2008 Eric Shirley Shield winners

Posted: September 5, 2008, 8:39 pm by KCBRFC
KCB's feeder side, the Cubs sealed their 2008 Eric Shirley Shield campaign in style with a four try 26-7 win over hosts Quins II on Saturday at the RFUEA. Despite this being a formality match, the Cubs went into this fixture hungry for a win against a side that had vanquished them twice in the season, 0-8 in the KRFU Chairman's Cup final and 7-11 in the Eric Shirley Shield first leg in June.

Both sides started the match tentatively sizing up each other for close to fifteen minutes. Steve Matioli raised the ball in the 18th minute and Bryan Omondi capitalized on indecisive handling by the Quins backs to score probably the easiest two tries of his fledgling rugby career. Omondi picked up the loose ball and cantered to the tryline. Matioli's conversion saw the Cubs lead 7-0. This try snuffed the life out of Quins as the Cubs rose to the ascendency, totally dominating the set pieces and open play. Matioli raised another high ball in the 32nd minute and for the second time Omondi was gifted with a try. Matioli was successful with the conversion. Scores 14-0 to the Cubs.

Quins were quick off the blocks in the second half, scoring a try in the 42nd minute through Franklin Rop. Kevin Bett was successful with his conversion. Cubs 14 Quins 7.
Quins soon ran out of steam as the Cubs absorbed the pressure. The introduction of experienced fresh legs by the Cubs technical bench was a masterstroke as the new inclusions upped the tempo against a tiring Quins and it was hardly a surprise when Xavier Makuba scored a pushover try in the 72nd minute that was converted by Matioli. Scores 21-7. Winger Dedan Omondi was the beneficiary of another pushover try in the 77th minute. Final Score Cubs 26 Quins 7.

The Cubs have been impressive in winning a first ESS since 2004 and will be out to reclaim the Mwamba Cup that they held between 2004 and 2006.

It is worth noting that they picked a bonus from every team they played against and conceded only five tries this term.

  • Kimanzi says Stars must beat Namibia

Posted: September 3, 2008, 11:36 am by KCBRFC

    By Gilbert Wandera

Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi has declared their clash against Namibia on Saturday as "a must win tie" saying they will not depend on the results between Zimbabwe and Guinea.

"We want to put our destiny in our own hands. And to do so, we must beat the Namibians on Saturday," Kimanzi said. "I know they have a new coach, which means they have a new way of thinking. That alone should make the clash difficult, but there are no two ways about it. We cannot afford to lose," he added.

Germinal Beerschot striker Victor Mugabe is unavailable for this weekend’s 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia.

Mugabe was ruled out after he failed to link up with the rest of the squad at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Harambee Stars head coach, Francis Kimanzi, revealed the player could not come to Nairobi following complications in his travel documents.

"Mugabe is not coming for the match although we had hoped to try him out. It is not a big blow to us since we have not used him in this campaign," said Kimanzi.

In the absence of Mugabe, Kimanzi has called up Mahakama striker, Francis Chinjili.

Contacted, Mugabe’s father, Noah Wanyama, said his son’s manager refused to release him for fear that he would not go back.

    new contract

"There were fears that he may not return to Belgium and so his agents held on to him. He will be available for the Guinea match," said Wanyama.

Wanyama said having just signed a new contract with the Belgium club, the agents are keen that he plays his first match for the team in the next two weeks.

The Stars’ coach also downplayed the absence of AJ Auxerre striker, Dennis Oliech, who is suspended after picking two yellow cards during Guinea and Zimbabwe matches.

"We don’t focus on individuals but on the team as a whole. In the past, we have to do without key players," he said in reference to McDonald Mariga and Patrick Oboya, who missed the June 21 return match against Zimbabwe in Harare.

With three days before the match, Kimanzi has intensified his training, focussing on different departments of the team in training.

In the last two days, the team has had at least nine sessions starting at 6.30a.m. The sessions focus on the goalkeeping, defence, midfield and striking force separately with one session bringing together the whole team in the evening.

Kimanzi is equally excited about playing at Kasarani on Saturday saying it favours his side.

"When we played our first match in Namibia the stadium was smaller, but this time we want to double everything for them. The stadium is bigger with more fans and will give us space to play while being a disadvantage to our opponents who may not be used to such," he added.

    Full house

Team captain Robert Mambo joined the team Tuesday morning as the camp registered a full house for the first time.

He came in a few hours after other foreign-based players, Mariga (Parma, Italy), George Owino (Yanga, Tanzania), Allan Wanga (Petro Atletico, Angola), Jamal Mohammed (Enkorrping, SK, Sweden) and Patrick Oboya (FK Siad Most, Czech).

Namibia coach says his team is under no pressure
  • New look Namibia squad to face Kenya named

Posted: September 2, 2008, 6:59 pm by KCBRFC
    By Ibra Khadudu

The 18 man Namibian squad to face Kenya this coming Saturday has been named.

New coach of the Brave Warriors Tom Saintfiet released the list on Sunday discarding a huge chunk of the initial 33 man list largely made up of local based players.

Saintfiet himself is one of the several changes in the squad having replaced fired Arie Schans, the coach who led the Brave Warriors over Kenya in Nairobi.

The final squad includes close to 10 South African based players as well as German based duo of Collin Benjamin and Wilko Risser who play for Hamburg Sv and Eintracht Fc respectively.

Oliver Risser who scored the first goal against Kenya in the first qualifier in Windhoek on May 31st is in the squad. With Risser, Attiel Mbaha, Richard Gariseb, Quinton Jacobs and Lazarus Kaimbi are the only five survivors of the triumphant squad over Kenya.

Coach Saintfiet has however left out Costa Kaiseb the man who scored an 89th minute goal that sunk and embarrassed Kenya in that game that ended 2-1. Jeremiah Baisako, Hartman Toromba, Maleagi Ngarizemo, Michael Piennar and Brian Brendell who were part of the winning squad as well as subs Efraim Tjihonge, Tuegela Tuyeni, Jacob Pineas and Rudolph Bester will also not be visiting Nairobi when the Namibian team jets in today.

Since beating Kenya, Namibia has gone three games without a win after loosing the next three games to Zimbabwe (twice) and to Guinea.

On the other hand, Kenya has neither lost nor conceded a goal since jetting out of Windhoek. Kenya beat both Guinea and Zimbabwe with identical 2-0 wins and drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe in the last game. Kenya is second in Group 2 tied with Guinea on seven points while Namibia is rock bottom at fourth with three points. Zimbabwe are third on five points.

    Complete Squad

Goalkeepers: Athiel Mbaha (Maritzburg United, SA), Abisai 'Zico' Shanin Gayamwe (Jomo Cosmos, SA)

Defenders: George Hummel (Jomo Cosmos, SA), Steven Goagab (Carara Kicks), Ivan Namaseb (Fc Ak, SA), Hartmann Toromba (Free State Stars, SA) & Richard Gariseb (Bidvest Wits, SA)

Jamal Mohamed, an exciting midfielder with Swedish club Enskoping is one of the inclusions in a 25-man squad Kenya announced to prepare for their September 6 2010 World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifying match with Namibia in Nairobi.

Mohamed last played for Kenya in December 2007, during the East and Central Africa Challenge Cup in Tanzania. Then, he was with Ghanaian club, Liberty Professionals. When the cup qualifiers started this year, new Kenya coach Francis Kimanzi did not pick Mohamed because he [the coach] said he had no idea in which country or club the player was.

The Kenya Football Federation (KFF) secretary general Sammy Obingo on Wednesday announced the squad and the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), who have been temporarily managing the Harambee Stars jointly with the KFF said the squad would report on August 25 at the training camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

KPLs Technical Officer, Frank Okoth, also indicated that the crucial qualifying match will be at the Moi International Sports Centre on September 6, and apparently not at Nyayo National Stadium as previously widely believed.

Domestic club players will be released to play for their respective sides in KPL League matches on the weekend of August 30 and 31, Okoth said.

Goalkeeper Arnold Origi who was injured in Kenyas 2-0 defeat of Zimbabwe in Nairobi during the June qualifying series is out of the squad together with Kenyas best forward Dennis Oliech who will miss the September match through suspension. Oliech took his second yellow card in the 0-0 draw in Kenyas last match with Zimbabwe in Harare.

Young Victor Mugabe, brother of midfielder MacDonald Mariga, has earned a call-up. Mugabe joined Belgian club Germina Beerschot as soon as he was identified as prospective key member of the national team but was unavailable thereafter.

Notable omissions is Moses Odhiambo of Rwanda club APR and Boniface Ambani the striker with Tanzania champions Young Africans.

A complete new call-up is Evans Amoka of Ulinzi Stars while Mulinge Munandi, the ex-Tusker defender now at Ulinzi, who last played for the Harambee Stars in the 2006 African Nations Cup qualifiers is back.

The Kenya squad: 1. Noah Ayuko (Sher Karuturi), 2. Jackton Odhiambo (Gor Mahia), 3. Duncan Ochieng' (Mathare United), 4. John Njoroge (Tusker), 5. Edgar "Fighter" Ochieng' (Mathare United), 6. Anthony Kimani (Mathare United), 7. Lloyd Wahome (Mathare United), 8. George Owino (Young Africans), 9.Victor Mugabe (Germinal Beerschot FC, Belgium), 10. MacDonald Mariga (Parma, Italy), 11.
