Kenya28Feb: Sing, unite, and DISPERSE
(Not in any way associated with Bunge La Mwananchi or Article 43 march)Today, the 28th of February 2011, Kenyans will stop what they are doing, wherever they are and sing the national anthem in unison at 1pm. The idea behind Kenya28Feb is to unite Kenyans in one action and provoke reflection about personal responsibility for fostering unity and peace.
We can only change Kenya if we support unity at a personal level, unity is a personal responsibility. To this end we wish to reiterate that
- Kenya28Feb is NOT a political event or protest!
- Kenya28Feb is NOT a political rally
- Kenya28Feb is ONLY about unifying Kenyans by singing the national anthem: there will be no speeches, before or after, nor any other related activities on this day.
- Kenya28Feb urges participants to congregate peacefully, sing the national anthem, and then disperse and carry on with their day.
As such, we hereby dissociate Kenya28Feb from any attempts to turn Kenya28Feb into a political rally; we disassociate Kenya28Feb from any attempts to turn Kenya28Feb into a political march.
As clearly stated in all promotional material, we urge all participants to remain true to the aims of this initiative: to congregate peacefully, sing the national anthem, and then disperse peacefully and carry on with their day.
Ni Wakati! We Are Kenya!

Nakumatt staff and customers set for Feb 28 national prayers
Posted: February 25, 2011, 10:25 pm by Kenya 28Feb
More than 4,500 staffers from Nakumatt Holdings chain of supermarkets in Kenya will on Monday afternoon join scores of Kenyans joining hands to pray for the nation by way of reciting the national anthem.
In a rare show of patriotism and national pride, Nakumatt Holdings staff and customers at all its 28 branches countrywide will momentarily take a break to recite the national anthem at 1pm on Monday 28th to pray for unity and God’s blessing for all Kenyans.
On the 28th of February 2011 at 1pm Kenyans will unite to sing all three verse of our beautiful and powerful National Anthem. On the 28th February 2011 the world will watch as Kenyans stand UNITED; 1pm, 1 nation, 1 people, 1 anthem, united in 1 prayer for 1 Kenya.
Speaking when he confirmed the firm’s participation in the Kenya Feb 28 initiative, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Atul Shah said the firm will be joining all Kenyans of goodwill to pray for unity and social cohesion.
The Nakumatt boss noted the public recital of a national anthem is the highest show of national pride and patriotism that a citizen can engage in.
“As a leading local corporate which is sincerely Kenyan at heart, we have accepted the request to pray for our beloved nation by reciting the national anthem on February 28th at 1pm in all our branches countrywide and salute the youthful organisers for such a worthy cause,” Shah explained.
And added: “such unity fostering nonpolitical aligned initiatives need to be encouraged at homes, offices and even workplaces to enable Kenya foster national unity and cohesion as embodied in our national anthem.”
According to one of the initiative organisers Ms Allison Ngibuini, in the face of ethnic polarisation, a highly politicised atmosphere and the daily search for daily bread, it is sometimes easy for all of us to forget what binds us together, that we are Kenyan and that we are strongest when united.
In this perspective, a group of Kenyans, of diverse interests, political affiliations, tribes, religions and economic backgrounds have agreed to come together on February 28th 2011 and take a few minutes at exactly 1pm (East African Time) to sing the three verses of the National Anthem.
“On this occasion, Kenyans come together, not to protest against anything but to stand for unity,” she explained.
And added: “The idea is simple; wherever we are, whatever we are doing at exactly 1pm on February 28th, Kenyans from all walks of life, will pause and sing the national anthem, led by participating media houses, church choirs, community choirs, school children, and musicians. This is an initiative that belongs to Kenyans: aimed at uniting us under the banner of our National Anthem.”
The Kenya National Rugby Sevens team among other national organisations will also be taking part in this first of a kind initiative.

Then its up to you. Because Unity is enough.
Posted: February 17, 2011, 5:48 pm by Kenya 28Feb
A lot of people upon hearing about this initiative have wondered, “then what?”. So Kenyans from all walks of life come together and sing the national anthem at the same time in one united voice. “Then what?” What is the larger project? What is the big point, what are we supposed to achieve?
Some have gone so far as to say, if there is no grand programme after we have sung, then why bother?
The answer is simple. Because Unity is Enough.
The national anthem is about all of us working together, it is about unity – and each one of us doing their bit to support the collective.
When people come together in an activity and do it in unison, the sense of brotherhood and the invigoration of their spirit, the sense that you are fighting this battle to survive, win in life with others; when we know and feel that we have something in common, that IN FACT holds us together and that our differences are mere details, then Unity is Enough.
This movement has only one purpose. To activate our kinship, our sense of togetherness, our recognition that we are united in purpose and vision. When you and I have taken time to reflect on what unity means to you personally and what role you personally have to play in your own surrounding to foster unity, you will know what should be done after the singing.
You will know what next.
Unity is enough because after we know we are together, we will be energised to work harder for what we believe in. We will see which part of Kenya’s problems we want to sort out and together, we will assist each other to improve our lives.
Because Unity as the whole point, is enough of a reason to stand at attention, next to a stranger, and sing the National Anthem.
The big point? Unite and Sing. What then after we have sung? Its up to you to decide.
