The coach is upbeat and is looking forward to quality build-up matches against some of the club sides, which will be playing in the Chairman's Cup from next week. Some of the Clubs, which Ocholla targets, are Kenya Commercial Bank, Impala, Mwamba and Nondescripts.

What Kenya's exploits at the Rugby World Cup Sevens means for Africa

Kenya's automatic qualification to the next Rugby World Cup Sevens is good news to African countries.
Before the fifth RWC Sevens in Dubai, questions were asked why Kenya was made to go through a qualification process in the Africa zone after proving her worth in the IRB Sevens World Series Circuit. The doubting Thomases were shamed after Kenya defied all odds to reach the fifth RWC Sevens in Dubai.
By reaching the main cup quarter final, Kenya had already joined the elite group of eight teams who automatically qualify. Unfortunately, there were some casualties on the way who will have to endure the qualification process. Among these are USA, Australia, France and Scotland who are core teams in the IRB Sevens World Series.
But, Kenya opened the doors for Namibia, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda who have been knocking on the doors of the RWC Sevens. It means Africa shall have five teams at the next RWC Sevens after Kenya and South Africa made it through automatically.
By virtue of reaching the semi-final, Kenya is likely to get a top four seeding unless the IRB uses the current form in the IRB Sevens World Series to determine the seedings like they did this year.
One of the ripple effects of Kenya's qualification could be a strong message to the International Olympic Committee that seven-a-side rugby needs to be included in the next Olympic Games.

Kenya back after historic RWC run

The national sevens rugby team on Sunday returned home to a heroic reception following their outstanding performance at the just-concluded IRB Sevens World Cup in Dubai. The team, led by coach Benjamin Ayimba and captain Humphrey Kayange, landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the afternoon to one of the most glamorous receptions ever accorded to sports stars returning from international duty.
There was a carnival mood at the airport as dozens of jubilant fans joined the players in song and dance while a battery of excited journalists clicked away.
Ayimba and Kayange described their performance as "phenomenal".
The Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) chairman, Richard Omwela, said the feat was a breakthrough not only for rugby but other sports in the country as well.
And Kayange said that their trial match against Fiji is what did the trick as Kenya rolled over the defending champions 26-7 to snatch a pricey Melrose Cup semi-final.
However, Argentina ended Kenya's fairytale with a 12-0 win in the semi-final.
Ayimba, who lavished praise on his troops for their belief, determination and hardwork, said they will continue to build on their success and at least reach the final in one the remaining events in the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Sevens Series this season.
Ayimba and Kayange were speaking upon arrival from their historic World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Automatic qualification
The sevens national team on Saturday made history by becoming the second team in Kenyan sporting circles after the cricket team to reach the semi-finals of a World championship.
The cricket team upset the likes of Sri Lanka to reach the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup that was jointly-hosted by Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
By making the Cup quarters at the World Cup, it means that Kenya automatically qualifies for the next Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2013 hence creating one more room for another African country to join the elite group.
"It is known that when you are leaving high you tend not to work hard and that is what we want to avoid," said Ayimba upon arrival from Dubai.
Ayimba said that their focus now shifts to Hong Kong Sevens, the next event in the IRB World series.
"We want to at least to go past the quarterfinals. I will be glad if a win will come along side things are now becoming very unpredictable," said Ayimba.
Ayimba rued the errors the team committed against Argentina that cost them the final spot. "We are all humans beings and bound to mistakes," he said.
Kayange said that their triumph over Fiji exposed the giants.

On a high in Dubai....

Kenya recovered from a try down to emphatically beat Hong Kong 43-7 at the Emirates Sevens ground on Friday to stay in contention for a quarter final berth at the IRB Rugby Sevens World Cup.
Kenya had the better of the opening half. Gibson Weru with two run-ins. For Hong Kong they got on the scoreboard early through Rowan Varty, but Kenya started to impose themselves.
A brilliant display of running Sevens rugby from the Kenyans, led to dancing in the stands and on the pitch. Hong Kong worked hard in defence, but Kenya showed they are a force to be reckoned with. Lavin Asego, Collins Injera and Horace Otieno all with tries for Kenya.additional information from Charles Nyende ( Nation Media Group) in Dubai
Earlier on Thursday, Tunisia grabbed the lead moments into the kick of through Abess Kherfani in this opening Group "E" try before Kenya hit back with a powerful running display to score five unanswered tries as the Virgin Atlantic sponsored Kenyans prevailed 29-7.
It settled the jitters of Kenya who were looking for a good start on Thursday ahead of Friday's final group matches against Hong Kong and England.
"Our minimum target is to make the Cup quarterfinals. We now have to beat Hong Kong today (Friday) and then look to the group decider match against England," Kenya captain Humphrey Kayange said after the match.
"Yes, we cannot cheat ourselves about this one. The big one will be against England. We will sleep on it and see how things go today (Friday)," coach Benjamin Ayimba said.
Ruthless finishing
The top teams in each of the six pools together with the best two runners up will qualify for the Cup quarters set for Saturday. England are favoured to top their pool led by Leicester flyer Tom Varndell who set the IRB world sevens series ablaze two years ago.
It will be interesting to see him come up with the current joint IRB sevens top scorer Collins Injera, who showed he was in his ruthless finishing form with three on day one. "Collins is just in that great form he has been in of finishing," Ayimba said of his lead try scorer.
After a nervous start that saw Tunisia take the game to the Kenyans and lead with a converted try, Kayange broke free on the left wing to go in and out of a lone defender and canter 40 meters too bring the scores to 7-5. Victor Oduor then fed Injera on the tackle. And in his current form the chasing Tunisians could only stare at his clean pair of heels.
Kenya paly England in a few minutes after going to press, the winner of this match qualifies for the quarter finals and the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup while the loser depends on mathematics and good luck to make it thorugh to the quarter finals.

2. Secondly, after the team building, we shall have the first of the chairman's mbuzi parties at the Lion's Den from about 1900 hrs. It is my great pleasure to welcome you over. Kindly make a small contribution – from beer to matumbo. The chairman will give a mbuzi and some drinks for the occasion. This will be a quarterly event, and we request you pen it in your digital diaries.
3. Third, we know that we are facing a very challenging year ahead – for this reason, we request for your support – material and in kind to help mobilise a healthy and active members club. To this end, we are compiling a general's database – kindly share this email with those you know, and please contact kiragu Ben (email in the cc) so that he can add more names to this database. We hope that this will build up towards a grand celebration of 20 years of KCB Rugby towards the end of the year.
